Ectropion and Entropion
Ectropion (Lid Turning Outward) and Entropion (Lid Turning Inward)
These conditions are most often caused by age-related tissue relaxation. However, injuries, burns, previous surgery, sun damage, and certain medical conditions can also cause the lids to become unstable. Symptoms of ectropion include tearing, redness, and irritation. Because the lid no longer contacts the eyeball, there is poor drainage of tears through the nasolacrimal system (tear ducts). Symptoms of entropion also include tearing and ocular irritation. However, unlike ectropion, entropion is due to the in-turned lid, which causes the eyelashes to rub against the eye. If left untreated, scarring of the eye and blindness can result.
Your Procedure
For ectropion surgical treatment is minimally invasive and involves tightening of the lower lid. Like ectropion, surgical treatment for entropion can also be corrected with a brief surgical procedure under local anesthesia.
